Our programmatic oversight often produces recommendations for agencies to address issues identified in our work and improve processes or the management of programs and operations. Through the recommendation follow-up process, we track agency action and determine whether they are making sufficient progress to meet the intent of our recommendations.
Oversight recommendations are central to ensuring that agencies take corrective actions to address identified problems, such as fraud, waste, abuse, or inefficiencies. IGs (Inspectors General) provide agencies with actionable solutions to improve the economy, and effectiveness of government programs and operations.
- Open Recommendations are recommendations for which an agency or entity has not yet completed action sufficient to meet the intent of the recommendation.
- Open and Resolved Recommendations are recommendations for which an agency or entity has agreed to take corrective action, but has not completed it yet.
- Open and Unresolved Recommendations are recommendations for which an agency or entity has not agreed to take action sufficient to meet the intent of the recommendation.
- Closed Recommendations indicate that an agency or entity has completed action sufficient to meet the intent of our recommendation.
GAO categorizes its open recommendations as those with which agencies concurred (counted here as open resolved) and did not concur (counted here as open unresolved.)
