What is Oversight?
Inspectors General (IGs) and organizations like the Government Accountability Office conduct independent audits, investigations, and evaluations to detect and deter fraud, waste, and abuse in government programs and operations. Oversight professionals’ objective reports promote accountability and transparency in government functions. This work also determines if programs and operations are economical, efficient, and effective. Reports are often accompanied by recommendations for their respective agencies that, if agreed to and implemented, improve processes and program management.
